PRELIMINARY EXERCISES

I have studied camera angles by reading Daniel Chandler's website The Grammar of Television and Film

This Camera Shot poster is useful to identify the different camera shots used for filming. It presents six different camera shots swell as labels to name each one.

 Production Logo:

I used Photoshop for the first time to create a simple production company logo. I decided to use an A4 landscape, using both a chalk blue and a darker blue to compliment each other. I chose a name that is unique to me and has a personal relevance (surname). Therefore, I have decided to call it: LEVINE LOOPS PRODUCTIONI have decided to incorporate an infinity loop into my logo as it connotes endless ambitions. The smaller text below indicates that this is my production company name clearly.

 On the set:

This evaluation presents my understandings and progression of using different equipments as well as the Canon Cameras and Manfrotto tripods

Cameras and Tripods:

We started in groups practising inserting the memory card and battery and learning how to handle them with care. When setting up the tripod we learnt how to 'bubble' the spirit level to ensure the cameras balanced and focused. If the bubble was in the centre on the two lines then it meant it was perfectly balanced; if not it would have to be adjusted, unless we wanted different angles. If we want to change the exposure on the camera we learnt how to adjust a dial and move it up and down. Ensuring the camera is safe and won't be dropped, when passing on the camera we must say 'yours' and 'mine', as well as putting the strap around our necks.

White Balance:

This is the process used to remove any unrealistic colour casts to make sure objects appearing white in person are rendered white in the photo. White balance must take into consideration the 'colour temperature' of a light source (referring to the warmth or coolness of white light). If you want to change this, then there's a white balance option which can be adjusted on the camera and when adjusted, multiple coloured tones come up to help create more realistic effects and different lightings.

180-degree rule:

The 180-degree rule ensures that when filming, the characters being filmed must stay within the same distance within the angle of each other.

On Set:

We learnt the terminology used in the film industry on set. The director must shout 'Standby' before filming as an indication filming is bout to commence and to ensure everyones ready. They then must reply to that with, 'Standing By' to notify the filters they're ready.

CONTINUITY EXCERSIZE

Our task was to film a short clip with continuity editing in order to try and involve the camera angles we recently have learnt in lesson. We were asked to film something unique and based off of our personal ideas, which we would then incorporate multiple camera shots/ angles and clean editing in. In our exercise we aimed to use a range of shots including close ups, tilt pans, tracking shots, over the shoulder shots, extreme close ups and high angle shots. Within this, we had to assign roles and edit our clips. Our continuity exercise is set around the airport security. During the film Ollie played the security guard, Olivia played the pedestrian, and then I filmed the shots. I edited this on iMovie

TABLE TOP EXERCISE

We were asked to construct a movie opening using a background soundtrack piece of our own choice and a table full of props. Ollie and I chose a piece named 'Laughing on the Outside, Crying on the Inside' by  Bernadette Carroll, which gave our piece an eery effect. As well as this we used a colour filter which tinted our shots to create a more interesting, dusty image. We were asked to include both live action as well as filming which displayed our set up table and therefore helped present our film theme, using objects such as blood stained money and a gun which reflected 'crime'.
